20 years ago I began working as a veterinarian in the Safari. Since then I have been dreaming about the founding of a "real" wildlife hospital. One that will give adequate treatment to injured wildlife which they so rightfully deserve.

Since I began working in 1990 the Safari has provided medical assistance to many hundreds of injured wildlife, and though for a short period a wildlife hospital was founded in the zoological center of Abu-Kabir, de facto the real thing was never founded in Israel – A hospital that includes: an adequate building, modern medical equipment and a professional team which can give the best medical care to wildlife.

In 2005 thanks to Mr. Eli Amitai, CEO of the Nature and Parks Protection Authority, and Mr. Yehuda Bar, CEO of the Safari, a true and real initiative was taken and a decision to found the Israeli Wildlife Hospital was in place.

While working with primates in Kenya, the local children had asked me which animals were common in my country. I began naming Israel's wild animals; unimpressed they asked if we hadn't any lions, crocodiles, cheetahs and so on. I replied that a long time ago these creatures did in fact inhabit Israel, but since we did not have the wisdom to protect them they became extinct, and if they would not protect their own wildlife they would share this fate.

Today I have the privilege of being part of a team that is acting precisely towards this purpose. To save, protect and return wildlife to their rightful place in Israel's nature and Worldwide. I believe that if we work together and realize how much prosperous and diverse our wildlife is and how much more can return and inhabit our country, we can be proud that we are part of a better world.

כבר בגיל צעיר התאהבתי בטבע הישראלי: בנופים המגוונים, בבתי הגידול השונים בצמחים הייחודיים ובעיקר בבעלי החיים המופלאים הסובבים אותנו. בכל הזדמנות הייתי (ועדיין) יוצאת לטפס על כל גבעה, לזחול בכל מערה, למצוא כל נביעת מים ולפגוש במינים חדשים של צמחים ובעלי חיים. אך לצערי אני רואה איך טבע זה הולך ונעלם מול עינינו.

בשל כך החלטתי שאני רוצה להיות חלק בשמירה על חיות הבר של ארצנו ושלמשימה זו אקדיש את חיי. בהתבגרותי הדרכתי בחברה להגנת הטבע ועסקתי רבות בחינוך לשמירת טבע. המשכתי בכיוון זה בלימודי, בחרתי ללמוד זואולוגיה ובהמשך וטרינריה ואף עסקתי בשמירת טבע של בית הגידול החולי של מישור החוף במהלך מחקרי בתואר השני.

כיום אני שמחה שנפלה הזכות בחלקי להגשים את חלומי ולעסוק בהצלה של חיות הבר הישראליות, בבית החולים לחיות בר, ואני גאה להיות חלק מהצוות המסור לשיקומם של חיות ארצנו.

טיילתי רבות בעולם, ראיתי נופים מדהימים ובעלי חיים ססגוניים, אך אין דבר יותר מרגש מלראות נשר דואה מעל מצוק ההעתקים, יעל מטפס על צוק בעין עבדת ואפילו צב יבשה מצוי לועס להנאתו עשבים בפארק הירקון ולדעת שהייתי חלק מהמאמץ המשותף בטיפולם והשבתם לטבע.

 I began working in the Safari in 1982 in the primate department. After one year I had already raised the first orphaned chimp. A few years later I was assigned to the clinic and assisted in veterinary care and management of the clinic. I was exposed initially to the importance of the wildlife hospital when the first injured vulture arrived from nature, needing constant medical care and a place to recuperate. Throughout the years I have cared for many young and orphaned animals. Some of the animals were from the Safari collection and some from the Israeli wildlife. Through the years I have accumulated much experience in raising and caring for mammals and birds and I believe in the importance of the wildlife hospital and the help which I can provide to the wildlife from my experience.

תמיד אהבתי בעלי חיים וידעתי שאני רוצה לעשות שירות אזרחי משמעותי שבו אני אזכה לעבוד ולעזור לבעלי חיים. התחלתי לחפש מקומות אפשריים להיות בהם ונתקלתי במידע על בית החולים לחיות בר, וברגע שקראתי את הדברים ידעתי – שם אני רוצה להיות!

מאז שהגעתי לבית החולים עבדתי עם עשרות מינים של חיות בר מהטבע הישראלי והייתי שותפה להצלת חייהם ולהשבתם לטבע של רבים מהם.

היום אני יודעת שבחרתי נכון ואני מאחלת לכל בני השירות תפקיד חשוב, מאתגר ומשמעותי כמו זה שזכיתי לו.

לאורך השנים טיפלתי ועבדתי עם בעלי חיים, אך רובם ככולם היו חיות בית אך בכל פעם ששאלו אותי מה אני רוצה לעשות כשאהיה גדולה אמרתי: "אני רוצה לתרום לטבע ולעבוד עם חיות בר".

ברגע שיכולתי התחלתי להתנדב בבית החולים לחיות בר, ולאחר תקופה התמזל מזלי והצלחתי להשתלב בצוות.

העבודה בבית החולים היא הדבר האמיתי בשיקום ובהשבה לטבע של חיות בר שרובן נפגע בגלל פעילות האדם. אנחנו כאן בשביל לנסות ולתקן חלק מהעוול שבני האדם גורמים לו: גזל שטחי בר, הרעלות, קיטוע בתי גידול ע"י כבישים, גידול בלתי חוקי של בעלי חיים ועוד. לצערי ידינו מלאות עבודה.

אין דרך בה אוכל להעביר במילים אלו את הסיפוק והאושר שמרגישים כאשר משחררים בעל חיים שהגיע אלינו על סף המוות ובזכותינו קיבל הזדמנות נוספת וחוזר אל הטבע.

אני נמצאת בבית החולים לחיות בר תחת מסגרת של שירות לאומי.
בתור אוהבת חיות, הרגשתי שהמקום הזה הוא המושלם בשבילי.
מאז הגעתי למקום, המודעות שלי כלפיי הטבע הישראלי השתנתה. גיליתי חיות נפלאות,
מינים וסוגים שונים של ציפורים, דורסים ויונקים. ביחד עם עשיית השירות, התחלתי להעריך הרבה יותר את הארץ בה אני נמצאת וללמוד הרבה דברים על החיות בה.
לעולם לא חשבתי שאמצא את עצמי נותנת אנטיביוטיקה לנשר, עושה פיזיותרפיה לשקנאי או מגדלת גורי עטלפים בשעות הפנאי.
חוץ מהחוויה הבלתי נשכחת והבלתי רגילה, אני מודעת לחשיבותו של המקום וגאה לקחת חלק בהצלת חיות הבר בישראל.
בסופו של דבר, אין דבר יותר מספק מלראות חיה שעברה טיפול ממושך אצלנו, פורשת את כנפיה וחוזרת בריאה ואיתנה אל הטבע.

זכרונות הילדות שלי תמיד קשורים לבעלי חיים ולבית סבי וסבתי שגרו בראש העין. בחצר תמיד היו בעלי חיים כמו עיזים, ברווזים ותרנגולים ואני אהבתי להסתכל עליהם ולטפל בהם. אני זוכרת איך ערב אחד סבתא קראה לכולנו לבוא ולראות את ה"עיזה" ממליטה. סבתא הסבירה לנו את כל התהליך והייתי מוקסמת.

תמיד אהבתי בעלי חיים והתעניינתי בהם וכשהבנתי שיש לי הזדמנות לעבוד עם חיות בר לא היססתי ושמחתי מאוד כשהתקבלי לשירות אזרחי בבית החולים לשיקום חיות בר.  עד עכשיו למדתי המון על טיפול ושיקום חיות בר, ובכל יום אני לומדת עוד.

I was born in Jerusalem on 1984, and from childhood I was interested in wild animals. Every week I went out to observe animals in nature, especially gazelles that were walking about the edges of my city.

A few years ago I was looking for a place to volunteer and arrived at the veterinary clinic in the safari. There I had the privilege to become a partner in the activities done in order to save wild animals. From there, I worked at the Israeli Wildlife Hospital as Assistant Veterinarian and took part in the founding of the current Israeli Wildlife Hospital. As part of the team in the hospital I feel pride and satisfaction towards my contribution in saving wildlife. This means closure for me, being a part of saving the animals I knew as a boy in nature.

When I came to the decision that I wanted to apply for national service, I knew straight away that the only thing I wanted most was to work with animals. When I heard about the wildlife hospital I realized this was my fortune, and that I would not accept anything less. To my satisfaction, I had made the right choice, the opportunity that opened before me to help animals in need, learn about them closely and obtain the finest means in which to care for them, brings me huge satisfaction. There is nothing grander than to see an animal you had invested everything in return to nature.

ההחלטה לעשות שירות לאומי נבעה מהצורך שלי לגמול למדינת ישראל על מה שהיא נתנה לי עד כה.
אני מאוד אוהב לטייל בארץ, לראות נופים ובעיקר להגיע למקומות טבעיים שיד אדם עדיין לא הספיקה להרוס. חיות הם חלק בלתי נפרד מהטבע שאותו אני כל כך אוהב ולכן בחרתי בבית חולים לחיות בר.
דרך הטיפול בחיות אני מרגיש שאני מכפר במידה מסויימת על הנזק שהאדם גרם לטבע.
